Writing
During the first part of the Spring term we will be creating tension, suspense and atmosphere using the text Varjak Paw as inspiration.
Following on from this we will look at emotive poetry using the book Where My Wellies Take me.
The children will focus on their emotions and the emotions of their readers this half term which will hopefully lead to some brilliant pieces of writing!
Religious Education
Our opening unit 'Local Church' asks the pupils to consider - 'Are books enriching?' We will make links between scripture and Christian beliefs and give reasons for when and how Christians use the Bible.
Following on from this we will look at the 'Eucharist.' Asking 'Why are we happiest when we are united?'
We will learn about North America.
Maths
During the Spring term we will explore knowledge of multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 will help to divide multiples of these numbers. Create problems based on knowledge of measurement and shape and space. Evaluate own understanding of maths and work on personalised targets.
Physical Education
Our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday. Please make sure that your child attends school wearing the correct PE kit in order to participate in this fun, important and compulsory area of school life.
Homework
Reading - Hearing your child read can be difficult at this age, but as often as possible, ask your child questions about their reading book, challenge them to predict what will happen next and ask them to summarise what they have read so far. We are aiming for your child to read at home for 15 minutes, 5 times a week. Reading is tracked electronically for volume and comprehension success and discussed with your child each Friday. A minimum of 100 pages and a pass-mark of 80% quiz scores are expected.
Spellings - these will be issued each Tuesday then tested on the following Monday. Handwriting practice sheets will contain the spelling list and are to be completed and returned for the Monday morning test. The school uses 'Spelling Frame' which supports the children's learning and this should be completed each week.
Maths - activities will be allocated weekly, using 'IXL.' Building effective routines now to ensure that homework is completed will ease the transition to Secondary school when the expectation is much greater.
In preparation for our SATs in May, practise test material will be sent home in addition to the weekly expectations.
