Year 1 Autumn learning
 
Writing
 
During the first part of the Autumn term 1, we will be immersed in composing repeated poems. Following on from this we will create then entertain with our Narrative tales based on local settings. Then we will end the term looking at informing our audience by writing postcards.
Physical Education
 
Our PE days are Monday and Friday. Please make sure that your child arrives in school wearing their school PE kit.  The children should also wear their usual school jumper or cardigan on these days. PE will take place outside and children will be able to wear hats and coats until they have warmed up for this fun, important and compulsory area of school life. Pupils will learn gymnastics looking at how they can balance independently and as a group Monday.  Pupils will practise the fundamentals of throwing and catching on a Friday
Maths
 
During the Autumn 1 term we will begin with looking at numbers to 10. Children will practice using different resources to help them represent numbers to 10. We will  looking at numbers to 10 counting forward and back. As well as ordering numbers using the key vocabulary; more than, less than, equal to. We will then move on to using a part whole model to learn number facts to 10. 
Religious Education
 
Our first unit this term is 'Domestic church- family' asks the pupils to consider - 'Why do we have family and who is your family?'  We will discuss who our families are and why they are special. We will look at understanding that there are different types of families and that God loves all families.
 
Following on from this we will look at Sikhism. Exploring the stories of other religions. 
Geography
In geography we are exploring our local area and asking the question 'How has made made our area special?'. We are looking at what makes Plymouth and Devonport unique. We will be exploring the human and physical features of the area as well as mapping our school surroundings. We will be going out into Devonport to see first hand the landmarks in Devonport.
