Reading at St.Joseph's

Reading Intent - 2021

Love Jesus, Love Learning, Love Knowing

At St Joseph’s our intention is that our children will:
  • experience a daily reading culture which supports our broad curriculum content
  • acquire skills of fluency, accuracy, expression and comprehension as a lasting legacy
  • enjoy reading for pleasure and foster this enjoyment to inspire and support their thirst for gaining a wide knowledge and vocabulary base
  • utilise reading as a vehicle through which pupils develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually
  • retain and recall a range of knowledge through fiction and non-fiction contexts
  • encounter God’s creation through reading with the aim that this will inspire them to reflect on the world that they have been gifted
Reading Curriculum Implementation - 2021

  • Class teachers select a new text each half-term which supports immersion in foundation subject knowledge
  • Class texts are chosen for age appropriate content and complexity based on Accelerated Reader’s Good Book Guide and lexile range allocated to that year group
  • Class texts become increasingly more complex from the beginning of the year to the end, as well as increase in complexity from year group to year group.
  • Class texts support the teaching of writing as good examples of character, plot and language use
  • Class texts are used over four days in 25 minute whole class reading lessons
  • Activation of prior knowledge around character, setting and plot is a consistent tool used at the beginning of every reading lesson in order to reduce cognitive load
  • Discrete tier two vocabulary is taught each week to support knowledge acquisition
  • Individual reading strategies are modelled then practised centred on an extract (Retrieval, understanding vocabulary, predicting, summarising, inferring.)
  • In these sessions, written responses to a hierarchy of questions are recorded in pupils’ guided reading books
  • Y2 to Y6 engage in book talk: weekly. Teachers model reciprocal reading strategies (Predicting, clarifying, summarising, questioning) which pairs of pupils practise with their correctly matched reading book
  • Pupils are read to daily from the same class text by their class teacher for 15 mins
  • Pupils read independently daily for 15 minutes from a correctly matched reading book based on phonic ability (KS1) or comprehension skill (KS2 - Star Reading Test)
  • The subject lead and teachers will plan for author visits to inspire pupils’ enjoyment of reading
Individual Reading Implementation - 2021

  • For children accessing the RWInc programme, a reading book which is correctly matched with their phonic ability, will be read daily and independently  This book will be familiar to them and will foster fluency, comprehension and ensure independent reading success.
  • A reading book will be taken home, where parents and carers are encouraged to listen to their child read and ask questions about the book, to check comprehension. The book level is carefully aligned with the RWInc level which the child is currently working at.
  • School readers will be changed regularly – ie once the adult in the classroom has judged that a new book is required (has read well with parents and finished with an adult in class.)
  • Foundation Stage and KS1 books are changed at the end of the day on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon.
  • In Y2, children continue with banded books until they join the ‘Accelerated Reader’ programme as their reading comprehension is above Oxford Reading Tree - Lime/Band 10
  • The children will then be allocated a range of reading books which are appropriate to their reading comprehension level. Children may then choose freely a book of their choice which falls within this range.
  • Reading will be recorded in the pupils’ reading record. Parents and carers are encouraged to listen to their child read and ask questions about the book, to check comprehension.
  • The school holds a parent reading workshop in the Autumn term and celebrates World Book day in the Spring term with engaging activities.
Reading for Enjoyment Implemenation 2021

  • The school library is open to all children and regularly restocked using the Plymouth Schools Library Service.
  • Each teacher will supplement the library resources by ordering topic boxes for the class’ half-term topic
  • KS1 classes visit every two weeks and there is an opportunity to hear a story read by the librarian.
  • KS2 classes visit the Devonport Library at least once every half term to encourage independent visits.
  • Each Summer, the librarian visits our school to promote the ‘Summer Reading Challenge’ and we strongly recommend that children take part.
  • World book day is celebrated annually with engaging activities to celebrate our love of reading
Intended Impact - 2021

Progress in reading comprehension is measured using weekly data from Accelerated Reader (KS2).  Progress will be at least in line with the pupils' chronological age and PIRA assessments (whole school) at the end of each term reflect 'Age Related Expectations.'
